a little bit of drizzle, a few scattered showers that could pass this morning before the system moves out, giving you a look. there at the dark start over oakland this morning where we are covered in partly clear, mostly cloudy conditions and you can see the drizzle there along the coastline and moving into the sierra snow falling here right about 6000ft. so that is also continuing for at least the first part of the day as this storm works its way across most of the pacific northwest and through california, as well as nevada, we are calling for the possibility of a few sprinkles this morning, followed by partly cloudy skies later today and winds expected to pick up behind the front. a better look at the current conditions, what you can expect for today and the weekend coming up at 401. let's see how the highways are shaping up this morning with sal. good morning. >> good morning rosemary. right now it look pretty good out there. i can't say much about the commute. it's nice and light. and sometimes on fridays we have a lighter commute and we're hoping for that today. it

is light. now usually it is at this early hour and you can see traffic on interstate 880 looks good and it also looks good on that san mateo bridge. this is 280 in san jose and that looks good as well. 401 let's get back to the headlines okay, sal. >> thank you. well, at stanford university, protest tents are up this morning. stanford is the latest school where pro palestinian demonstrators are occupying the campus. the movement started last week at columbia university. it has spread across the country at both public and private colleges and universities. ktvu is lamonica peters has more from stanford. >> at stanford university, hundreds of pro-palestinian protesters gathered thursday afternoon chanting and marching on campus. we will not stop. >> we will not rest. >> this was financed through their chants. they called on the university to divest from what they call apartheid design on a quarter.

>> no more money for israel slaughter. no more money for israel slaughter. free palestine, free free palestine to divest means the university would divert money from its investments in companies that protesters believe are tied to israel and profit from the war in gaza. >> and if you really want to know what the students want, maybe, just maybe, try to talk to them, try to sit down on a table with them, maybe try to listen to their chants once and not think about it as just some mob that's trying to destroy your house. >> organizers at stanford are calling the movement the people's university of palestine, and say they want to establish an alternative learning space to raise political consciousness in white memorial plaza, supporters spoke about why they felt compelled to join the protest. >> i urge us to keep all of this in mind, that the black struggle in the palestinian struggle are inextricably tied to one another as an international student from vietnam, the only reason that

i'm standing here right now is because a few decades ago, millions of students and people from all over the world and the us stood up and fought for us, for divestment, for liberation, for the wars and the killings to stop. >> now, i reached out to stanford university officials, and they say they support the students right to free speech. but if any of the university's policies are broken, they do intend to pursue disciplinary action. lamonica peters, ktvu, fox two news. all right. >> lamonica, thank you. and at uc berkeley, a pro-palestinian protest continues with tents set up at sproul plaza. so far, it's been a peaceful protest in less than three weeks, the spring semester at cal will end. uc officials say they don't plan to change their investment policies or practices, which the protesters are demanding now. down in los angeles, ucla now has ten set up by hundreds of protesters. the encampment also

has a library, a medical tent and a desk for where the media can check in. last night there was a counter protest, but no injuries were reported. no arrests were made. >> we are here because we have a set of demands, including a divestment with our university in ucla. >> i think this is a shame, shame that ucla administration is allowing this to happen. >> the next gate over and you see, they have canceled the main graduation ceremony, with administrators saying new safety measures on the campus mean it wouldn't be possible to process the 65,000 people who normally attend the event. >> the usc campus has been closed to the general public since wednesday. that's when 93 protesters were arrested during a pro-palestinian protest. only students, faculty members and employees are allowed on the campus now at columbia university in new york city. the administration backed off of a midnight deadline for pro-palestinian protesters to

take down their encampment on the campus. the university president released a statement less than an hour before the midnight deadline, saying talks with the protesters are showing progress and will continue now. classes continue to be online only for the rest of the semester. well, here at home, two community sessions are scheduled tomorrow by the san francisco unified school district. parents will get a chance during these saturday meetings to talk about the plan to close or merge some public schools. this follows last night's virtual town hall meeting where school superintendent matt wayne responded to several questions. many parents worry that smaller schools will be targeted by the school district. >> if we had said our commitment was to have the same number of students in every school, well, then we could just say, well, we're going to have, you know, in every school has 1000 students. well, then it's really easy, right? we'd have 49 schools, but we're not going to do that because that does not

align with our commitment to a variety of school sizes. >> now, superintendent wayne says the cuts are necessary because of a growing budget deficit. but he also said no decision has been made on how many schools may have to close. tomorrow's meetings will be held at sheridan elementary school and roosevelt middle school, and then next week, five more in-person meetings will be held. our time now, 406 the car of u.s. senate candidate adam schiff was burglarized in san francisco. schiff's car was in a downtown parking garage when his luggage was stolen. here you see adam schiff in burlingame. he was speaking at a campaign event while everyone else was dressed more formally, schiff was wearing a shirt and vest. the rest of his clothing were inside the stolen luggage. the family of an east bay man who was on life support is demanding answers after an incident earlier this month at a park in oakland. now they're saying that an east bay regional park

officer tased deonte faison while he was in the water at the martin luther king junior regional shoreline on april 5th. the family's lawyers say the man had jumped into the water after being stopped by police and then was tased in the back when he tried to swim away. >> say it shouldn't take an attorney to tell you that electricity and water don't mix. were bold enough to do that, but not brave enough to jump in and save them. >> now the man's lawyer says he struggled in the water for up to 30 minutes before he lost consciousness. the park district says it doesn't comment on pending lawsuits. our time is 408. the alameda county da's office is set up a hotline for people affected by a recent review of death penalty cases. 35 cases are being reviewed now. district attorney pamela price says her office found evidence that former prosecutors illegally kept black and jewish people off of juries. the phone

number there on your screen, if you think you or your family might have been affected, victims and survivors in these cases who have not yet been contacted by her office, are being asked to call that number. well, happening today, a dedication in san francisco for a mural honoring the late reverend cecil williams and his wife, janice, the late pastor died monday at the age of 94. his wife died back in 2021. san francisco's japantown task force said. this event will take place between noon and 4 p.m. at glide memorial church on ellis street. the task force described the couple as extra ordinary champions of the poor and the vulnerable. all right, our time is 409. let's get you ready for friday's weather. very interesting. i didn't know it rained last night. rosemary. >> yes, dave. i was in my living room and i heard. yeah, on my rooftop. and i look out the

window and then it's coming down. i'm like, wow. all right. as expected. but what it actually occurs, you're still a little blown away by it giving you a look here over the oakland skyline, where we continue with the possibility of a few scattered showers. i did check the 24 hour accumulation graphics with the national weather service and not much accumulation. a few 107 inch reported in some spots, but in any event, here's a view of storm tracker two, where we have a little bit of drizzle out there this morning right along the coastline. and we do expect the clouds to join us through at least the morning hours behind the front. it's going to turn breezy and windy later today. and in the sierra snow levels look to be right about 6000ft and that is expected to continue through most of the day as well. take a look at the storm there. pacific northwest, california, nevada continuing to push east and bringing us a spring like storm. the snow levels are expected to remain above 6000ft, but some of those higher elevations likely to get a few

inches of new snow in the future, cast for us here. notice by about noon time we'll call for partly cloudy conditions. so it's not going to last all day and it's not really going to be that big of a deal. if you are worried about it, maybe bring the umbrella or something to protect you as you get out the door this morning into the evening hours, we will be partly cloudy, but take a look at the shades of oranges and pinks that come our way by about noontime. so a little bit of a breeze out there. turning windy for the afternoon, and then it will begin to back off as we get a little bit closer to sunset temperatures this afternoon, ranging from upper 50s to upper 60s. i'll have a look at those numbers, plus the warming trend on the way for the weekend and beyond coming up in the extended forecast. dave. >> all right, rosemary, thank you. time is now 411 honoring the life of an oakland police officer who died after being on life support almost six years. the memorial taking place later today for police officer jordan wingate and donald trump's hush

and simitian remain tied, both will take on the cartel in essentially a three way runoff. well a bill that was meant to help people from arizona to get access to abortion care here in california is moving through the state assembly. the bill would allow licensed arizona doctors in good standing to get temporary clearance to come here to california to perform abortion procedures on arizonans. that proposal is headed to a committee within the state assembly. in the meantime, arizona house lawmakers approved a bill to repeal or repeal arizona's near-total ban and to replace it with a 15 week ban. that measure now heads to the arizona state senate. time is now for 15. former president donald trump heads back to court this morning as the first week of his criminal trial in new york is coming to an end. the us supreme court, meantime, is considering what, if any,

immunity presidents may have from criminal prosecutions. reporter doug luzader is from washington. right now with the impact these legal issues may have on this year's election. >> as we wait now for the supreme court to render a decision about presidential immunity. donald trump is required once again to return to a new york courtroom, turning his court appearance yesterday into something of a campaign stop. a former president trump met with union construction workers outside the courthouse in new york today. renewed focus on his relationship with david pecker, the former publisher of the national enquirer, who has described trying to suppress negative stories about trump. and despite accusations that he has violated a gag order, trump railed on the case. >> this is a trial that should have never happened. this is a case that should have never been filed. >> you're bound to lose, you fascist bound to lose. >> no gag order outside the us

supreme court yesterday, as justices considered trump's argument that presidents should enjoy broad immunity from criminal prosecutions, including the election interference charges he faces. >> hard to imagine that a president who breaks the law is faithfully executing the law. >> justices seemed skeptical of sweeping immunity claims, but they may settle on a more limited approach. >> i'm not focused on the here and now of this case. i'm very concerned about the future. >> i think what the case is going to come down to is how sweeping is the immunity that a president has, and what exactly does it include? and it may not be possible for the court to decide what it concludes without further proceedings in the lower courts. >> and if that happens, if this case gets sent back down, it makes it very unlikely that trump's election interference trial would wrap up before the november election. in washington, doug luzader, fox news okay, doug. >> thank you. time now for 17.

california lawmakers are demanding an update from the bureau of prisons about the decision to close the scandal ridden women's prison in dublin. now, senators alex padilla and laphonza butler sent a letter to the bureau's director calling for immediate information about the efforts to give inmates, quote, care, dignity and respect to which they are entitled. the bureau says it's addressing all of the needs of the inmates with compassion during this transfer process. well, an investigation into the cause of a massive fire to spark on the oceanside pier in san diego county is underway. firefighters say that big fire started yesterday afternoon in a vacant restaurant at the end of the pier. about 200 firefighters, lifeguards and police arrived there within minutes. the crews stopped the forward progress of the fire about three hours later. investigators will be back out there this morning looking at the scene. the cause of the fire

may not be known for days. all right, let's talk about your weather here in the bay area. it's 418 and rosemary has your forecast as we get a brand new friday. >> yes. good morning. today, tgif. f to you and all of you out there starting out with a look here over oakland this morning, waking up with a little bit of drizzle a few sprinkles this is going to push out later today. and behind it we do expect breezy to windy conditions as it will begin to die down into the evening hours. and then we are settling in for a nicer weekend. to giving you a look here at storm tracker two, where that little bit of green on the screen indicating it's a little soggy out there this morning. how about the sierra? if you're traveling up, there's not an advisory for travel, but a few inches of snow will be a possibility above 6500ft today. because as i pull back for you here and show you, there's quite a bit going on out there over the pacific northwest, parts of california, nevada farther to the east. but by the second part

of the afternoon evening hours, it's moving out and we are left with dry weather for the rest of the weekend and the start of next week. here's a look at noontime, where the bay area does begin to dry out. the sierra will take a little bit longer into the evening hours. again, do expect some of those winds out there to be picked to pick up. we don't have a wind advisory, but winds could reach 35mph or so and then into the weekend and stopping it for you into early next week. a gradual warming trend right now, tuesday looks like it will be the warmest. i'll show you those in the extended forecast right now. the winds. not too bad. it is a little breezy out there. oakland reporting 14mph. a fairfield reporting 13 but expected to pick up in the afternoon. so prepare for that 55 degrees right now in san francisco mid-fifties and walnut creek. temperature wise not too bad. and into the afternoon, a lot of 60s out there. we have shore, 64 in hayward, and for our warmer locations inland, upper 60s in areas like concord and in the north bay. 67 for

napa. the extended forecast here, temperatures will climb ever so slightly getting into your bay area saturday with a little bit more sunshine and a little bit warmer on sunday, and the trend continues by tuesday, nearing 80 degrees or so far, inland cities, 70s around the bay and 60s at the coast. dave. all right. >> rosemary. thank you. time is 420. well, if you're headed to yosemite national park, you're going to see a slightly different bridal veil falls. now, the yosemite conservancy posted this video showing upgrades to the famous attraction there. the makeover consists of some new trails and viewing decks, and some new bathrooms as well. the changes come just in time for the busy summer season. the yosemite conservancy is a nonprofit organization that led this upgrade. it was funded by donors . is ground broke on the project back in 2018? mean time is 421. big profits for pg and e. the utility says its first quarter

friday light. most of the time we do have those unless something happens and we're crossing our fingers. it looks pretty good here on interstate 880. i've been looking at the south bay commute. it's nice and light. there's not a lot going on. and likewise for the peninsula. if you live on the peninsula 101 and 280 are doing very well. it's 431. let's get back to the headlines. >> okay, sal, thank you. well, a funeral will be held today for a fallen oakland police officer who died after being on life support almost six years now. back in 2018, officer jordan wingate was responding to a report of suspicious people at the port of oakland. a car collided with his patrol suv as he was heading to the scene and caused it to crash into a parked big rig. he was on life support ever since this month. he died earlier this month. oakland police will hold a procession. they will escort his casket to the three crosses church in castro valley. the service begins at 11:00 this morning and

it will be open to the public, where an artist and army veteran paying tribute to officer wingate, johnny castro, sent us this image that he created. it involves hundreds of what he calls portraits of valor. our time is 432. pleasanton schools district is offering grief counseling today to students and faculty members. after a family of four was killed in a horrible crash on a dangerous stretch of the road. it happened wednesday night, about 9:00 on foothill road near stone ridge drive. ktvu jesse gary tells us about the investigation into the crash and how it's bringing back memories of a similar incident almost five years ago. >> hours after impact, charred earth and firefighting foam tell part of the grisly tale on foothill road in pleasanton wednesday night, an electric vehicle carrying four people crashed into a tree and caught fire. pleasanton police

investigators say all four occupants, two adults and two children, were killed. >> we're aware that any any loss of life, especially when it involves an entire family as an impact on students and staff and parents and guardians, patrick gannon of the pleasanton unified school district wouldn't say which schools the two children attended, but did say the entire school community of 13,000 pre-k through 12th graders is devastated. >> police investigators are looking to see if speed was a factor in the crash. the impact knocked the bark off one side of the tree at the scene four and a half years ago, a similar incident also on foothill road, three teens twins michelangelo and mark anthony urista and their friend javier ramirez, died at the scene near castlewood drive on christmas night. investigators say the driver lost control, hitting a utility pole and then a tree. two other occupants were severely injured. this latest loss of life is pulling at

heartstrings, still overcoming the last emotional wound. school district officials say extra support is being made available to students and staff thursday and friday. >> we've provided some extra counseling and support resources to students on campus. we have wellness centers at our middle and high schools, and students have been encouraged to visit, those those resources if they have a need. we're also following up with families at the end of the day with an email with, a lot of a lot of resources as far as, grief and just being there for, for students for whatever they need. >> pleasanton police say they're waiting for the alameda county coroner to make positive identification of the victims who died and notify their extended family. once that happens, investigators here will be able to give us the names and the ages of those who died in the crash outside pleasanton police headquarters. jesse gary, ktvu, fox two news time is now.

other information to third party vendors. kaiser says about 13.4 million people will get a notification about that security breach. there's no word yet on when this happened with two california representatives are taking a closer look now at the property insurance crisis here in california. north bay congresspersons mike thompson and jared huffman met at santa rosa's coffey park. it's a neighborhood that's been devastated by the 2017 tubbs fire. the lawmakers talked about the disaster, resilience and coverage act that would provide federal financial help to make properties more disaster resistant through grants and tax credits. now, the act comes as several insurance companies have pulled out of california. >> when you put it all together, this is an important piece of making sure that insurance remains available, able and also affordable to the folks that we

committed almost seven years ago to continue and to stand with and to serve. >> now, the bill was referred to two separate congressional committees last month for further review. time is now 437 pg and e just released its latest profits report. now for the january through march 1st quarter of 2024, pg and e says it had a $732 million profit. that's up 28% from 566 $89 million in earnings for the same quarter last year. that increase in profits comes in the middle of frustration among pg and e customers over the skyrocketing monthly bills. with even more increases on the way. san francisco's public utilities commission says it's moving ahead with its goal of buying the electric grid from pg and e, the commission says pg and e rejected its offer of $2.5

very busy bay area highways will be closed for repaving work. now, interstate 680 southbound will be closed between the 580 interchange in pleasanton and koopman road in sunol. the freeway is going to be shut down between 9:00 tonight until 4 a.m. monday morning. those crews will replace and repair the pavement. no full closures of 680 are planned after this weekend. however there will be some lane closures on weekends during may. in the north bay highway 37 westbound is going to be closed between highway 29 in vallejo and highway 121 at sears point. all of the westbound lanes are going to be closed from 9:00 tonight until 4 a.m. monday. this is a second of four weekend closures on highway 37 to repair and replace the pavement. the eastbound direction of 37 will be closed. the first two weekends of may. it is 454. a battle over title

at an oakland park earlier this month. they say an east bay regional park officer tased deonte faison while he was in the water at the martin luther king junior regional shoreline on april 5th. the family's attorney says faison had jumped into the water after being stopped by police and was tased in the back while he tried to swim away. >> it shouldn't take an attorney to tell you that electricity and water don't mix. were bold enough to do that, but not brave enough to jump in and save them. >> the man's attorney says he struggled in the water for up to 30 minutes before losing consciousness. the park park district says it does not comment on pending lawsuits. members of a group in san francisco took matters into their. own hands, with the goal of improving safety for

it's occupied at this time, we have no report of injuries. but when firefighters arrived, that wind that you just heard about was pushing smoke for blocks. heavy smoke, visibility was very low and it was very dangerous for our firefighters in the wind and in the mist. >> was anyone inside? >> we have no reports of any occupants at this time. >> okay. do you do you know what the building was used for? >> it is a residential building, four stories. we do have our bureau of fire investigation on the scene, speaking with neighbors, and any witnesses? this was an early morning fire called in just before 430, usually during the day. we have folks out and about moving through the city that can call in a fire early. but at that time of the hour, that time of the day, that hour, most folks are still asleep. >> and, captain, did you have to use any extraordinary equipment to help battle this fire? >> what the neighbors saw early this morning as the smoke began to clear is our 100 foot ladder. trucks had their ladders fully extended with the water pipes at

the end pushing as much water as we could onto this fire from the outside, the front of the building is covered with scaffolding, which prevented traditional firefighting efforts. >> have there been any building collapses? i mean, has is the structure still standing? >> the structure is still standing. the topmost floor has burned through the roof, and as the sun is starting to come up, the department of building inspection will be able to determine what floors are safe for firefighters to continue to work on. we're still putting out hot spots, but we were able to hold this fire to the building. it started in. we did evacuate the buildings on either side as a precaution, but those buildings are still safe to occupy. >> so is it safe to assume conditions are improving now? >> conditions are improving considerably, not just with the window, the wind dying down, but we've also been able to knock down the bulk of that fire and be able to get our fire crews a little bit closer to work. more in the void spaces, as you can

. it spread around the country at both public and private colleges and universities, at uc berkeley, a pro-palestinian protest continues with tents set up at sproul plaza. so far, it's been a peaceful protest in less than three weeks from now, the spring semester at cal will end. uc officials say they don't plan to change their investment policies or practices, and that's what the protest ers are demanding. and down in los angeles, ucla now has tents set up by hundreds of protesters. the encampment also has a library, a medical tent, even a desk where the media can check in. last night there was a counter protest, but no injuries were reported. no arrests were made. >> we are here because we have a set of demands, including a divestment with our university in ucla. >> i think this is a shame, shame that ucla administration is allowing this to happen. >> and at usc, they've canceled

the main graduation ceremony. administrators saying new safety measures on the campus mean they wouldn't be able to process the 65,000 people who normally attend the event. the usc campus has been closed to the general public since wednesday. that's when 93 protesters were arrested during a pro-palestinian protest. only students, faculty members and employees are allowed on the campus. >> the san francisco unified school district has two community meetings set for tomorrow the saturday meetings will give parents a chance to discuss the district's plan to close or merge some of the district's schools. tomorrow's sessions follow a virtual town hall meeting last night in which superintendent doctor matt wayne responded to a range of questions. many parents said they were concerned the district would target smaller schools in the city. >> if we had said our commitment was to have the same number of students in every school, well, then we could just say, well, we're going to have, you know, in every school has 1000 students. well, then it's really easy, right? we'd have 49 schools, but we're not going to

now at 633. let's get back to the headlines and straight to that developing story we've been following in san francisco, where crews have the upper hand now on what was at a time a raging fire that gutted a four story residential building. >> the two alarm fire was burning on clay street at lyon, not far from the presidio branch library. the fire department says when crews arrived, the building was engulfed in flames. at this point, the fire is for the most part out, but crews are still busy putting out hot spots . they tell us that no one was legally living in the building at the time. the fire did not spread to neighboring buildings. student protesters on the stanford university campus held a march and rally against the war in gaza and ktvu sally rasmus is out there. >> the demonstration continues this morning with an encampment on the stanford campus. ali, good morning. >> good morning. dave and garcia will. behind us is white memorial plaza in the middle of the stanford university campus. i'll step out of the way and show you. you can see several dozen tents sprawled out here on the lawn, and just a few people starting to wake up after they spent the night here yesterday.

report between january and march, the first quarter of 2024. pga reported a profit of $732 million, up more than 28% compared to the same quarter last year. that jump in profit comes during a frustrating time for many customers about skyrocketing monthly bills, with more increases on the way. the san francisco public utilities commission says it's moving ahead with its goal of buying the electric grid from pga. the commission says pga rejected its offer of $2.5 billion to buy the power grid. so now the city has asked the state public utilities commission for an independent valuation of the grid, hearing are due to begin later this year . >> san francisco would see the benefits of public power without impacting tax dollars used for critical city priorities like affordable housing and public safety. >> now, the city of san
